Key Findings from the WHO Global Oral Health Status Report

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines oral health as the condition of oral, dental, and orofacial structures that enables individuals to perform essential functions such as eating, breathing, and speaking.

According to the “WHO-Global Oral Health Status Report: Towards Universal Health Coverage for Oral Health by 2030,” the global state of oral health is a cause for concern. Untreated oral diseases affect nearly half of the world’s population. One of the most significant reasons for this is the lack of access to appropriate treatment or the prohibitively high costs, which are consistent issues worldwide.

The report indicates that in 2019, the total expenditure on oral diseases, excluding oral cancer and including both public and private treatment costs, reached 387 billion US dollars among 194 countries. This amount roughly translates to around 50 US dollars per capita on a global scale and constitutes approximately 4.8% of global direct healthcare expenditures. In low-income countries, per capita spending on oral health is as low as 0.52 US dollars, while high-income countries have an average per capita spending of around 260 US dollars (500 times higher).

Over one-third of the global population lives with untreated tooth decay. The global prevalence of dental caries in permanent teeth is approximately 29%, representing over 2 billion cases. The prevalence doesn’t significantly differ among income groups. Additionally, the estimated global prevalence of severe periodontal disease in individuals aged 15 and above is approximately 19%, representing over 1 billion cases worldwide. Another oral health issue is tooth loss, which is typically the result of severe dental caries and serious periodontal diseases that can also be attributed to trauma leading to tooth extractions. The global average prevalence of complete tooth loss among individuals aged 20 and over is nearly 7%, accounting for over 350 million cases (in 2019). For individuals aged 60 and over, the global prevalence is estimated to be much higher, at around 23%.

Treating oral diseases is of significant importance, as they directly affect both individual and workforce productivity. The report estimates that the productivity losses due to oral diseases are approximately 42 US dollars per capita and around 323 billion US dollars globally.

Turkey: Pioneering Oral Health and Dental Aesthetics with Cutting-Edge Technology and Affordable Excellence

Health tourism presents itself as a viable alternative to addressing these issues. Individuals who cannot find the needed treatments in their home countries or are unable to afford expensive treatments can travel to countries where these treatments are performed effectively and at reasonable costs.

Dental treatments not only focus on maintaining oral health but also encompass aesthetic improvements. Turkey stands out as a leading country globally when it comes to oral health and dental treatments. Turkey offers the latest technologies, highly experienced expert teams, and affordable prices.

The main medical procedures carried out to preserve oral and dental health and to address oral discomfort include: Teeth Cleanings; Fillings; Root Canal Treatments; Tooth Extractions; Dental Implants; Dental Crowns; Orthodontic Treatments; Oral Cancer Treatments; Periodontal Treatments; Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Prosthesis and Dental Bridge Procedures.

Professional dental hygiene involves the removal of plaque and tartar from the teeth, while fillings are used to repair decayed or damaged teeth. Root canal treatment is employed to clean and fill infected pulp tissue within teeth, and tooth extractions are performed when teeth are severely decayed or impacted. Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth, while dental crowns are preferred to correct the shape, size, and color of teeth. Orthodontic treatments ensure proper teeth alignment, while oral cancer treatments involve surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy. Periodontal treatments address gum diseases, while pediatric dentistry focuses on children’s oral health. Oral and maxillofacial surgery encompasses complex procedures, and prosthodontics and dental bridge procedures are used to replace missing teeth.

In addition to treatments aimed at oral and dental health, there are various aesthetic dental procedures performed to enhance the appearance of teeth. Aesthetic dental treatments, such as teeth whitening, veneers, porcelain crowns, dental bonding, orthodontic corrections, dental implants, dental veneers, gum contouring, and smile design, aim to improve a person’s smile aesthetics. It’s important to note that each treatment should be planned according to individual needs and oral health conditions.

Among aesthetic dental treatments, teeth whitening stands out as the most popular one. It is used to lighten the color of teeth that have been stained or discolored due to factors such as age, smoking, specific foods, and beverages. This procedure involves the application of chemical agents or laser to remove stains and achieve a brighter and more radiant smile. Veneers, on the other hand, are thin, custom-made shells usually crafted from porcelain or composite resin that are bonded to the front surface of teeth. They provide an instant transformation, offering individuals a flawless, symmetrical smile with minimal alteration to the natural teeth. Porcelain crowns are used to restore damaged or decayed teeth, creating a natural appearance and immediate transformation by attaching thin, specially designed shells to the front surface of teeth. Dental bonding is an affordable and non-invasive procedure used to correct minor dental flaws such as chips, cracks, gaps, and discolorations. During the procedure, a tooth-colored composite resin is applied and sculpted to match the natural tooth shape. Orthodontic treatments include the correction of misaligned teeth, using almost invisible aligners that are custom-made to fit each patient’s teeth. These treatments provide a more aligned and aesthetically pleasing smile without the need for traditional braces with metal brackets and wires. Dental implants, which are artificial tooth roots made of titanium, offer a permanent and aesthetically pleasing solution for those with missing teeth. They are surgically inserted into the jawbone and, once integrated, a natural-looking crown is placed on top to complete the restoration. Implants not only restore functionality but also preserve facial structure and prevent bone loss, resulting in a more youthful appearance. Dental veneers are a versatile solution for correcting various dental imperfections, including chipped, misaligned, or stained teeth. These thin, custom-made shells are typically crafted from porcelain or composite resin and are bonded to the front surface of teeth. Veneers provide an instant transformation, giving individuals a flawless, symmetrical smile with minimal tooth alteration. Gum contouring, also known as gum reshaping, is a cosmetic procedure that involves removing excess gum tissue or reshaping the gum line to create a balanced and proportionate smile. Smile design is a concept that encompasses various dental treatments aimed at aesthetically enhancing an individual’s smile. Smile design procedures refer to a comprehensive aesthetic improvement plan that may involve changing the color, size, shape of teeth, and even the correction of gum aesthetics.
